SUMMARY:History of AAPI Exclusion in the US
DESCRIPTION:In the past year\, there has been a measurable increase in hate crimes\, violence\, and animosity toward Asian-Americans. This uptick and anti-Asian rhetoric and violence has impacted a cross-section of individuals and communities\, regardless of their ethnicity\, citizenship status\, religion\, or political affiliation. Is this a new phenomenon simply attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic and xenophobic reactions to it? Or does anti-Asian prejudice go deeper than one challenging year in global politics and health? \nJoin YWCA Rhode Island and Dover Town Library in their ongoing series exploring important issues of race\, racism\, and US history\, policy\, law\, and social attitudes as we turn our lens on the complex history of anti-Asian bias in the US. From immigration bans\, to years-long bombing campaigns\, to refugees abandoned in US cities\, to the model minority myth\, we will explore how US white supremacy has impacted people of Asian heritage across centuries of US history and today. \nUpon registering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Eventbrite containing the Zoom ID and password. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Internalized Racism among Asian Americans
DESCRIPTION:What is internalized racism and its personal\, social\, and political consequences for Asian Americans? This session will comprise of mini-lectures\, reflective activities\, and open conversation geared primarily for Asian Americans and other BIPOC\, but open to all. \nParticipants will: \n\nacquire and/or expand their understanding of the origin\, nature\, mechanism\, and outcomes of internalized racism in their lives\,\nexplore their historical and psychological relationship to racialization\, and\,\nconsider strategies for healing\, resisting\, and transforming internalized racism.\n\nOur instructor\, Dr. Andrew (Andy) Young Choi is a psychologist whose scholarly\, teaching\, and clinical interests include racialization\, identity formation\, intersectionality\, mental health\, queerness\, and empowerment in the Asian diaspora\, and transformative education and liberation psychology more broadly. SUMMARY:Women4Good May Community Call: Standing with the AAPI + Women Community
DESCRIPTION:Women4Good stands in support of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. We’re hosting our May Community Call to provide a space to listen to the experiences of our community members and take a stand against racism\, hate and violence directed toward AAPI communities. We hope this discussion will help educate our Women4Good community about the discrimination and bias the AAPI community faces\, discover the beauty of the AAPI cultures\, offer resources for being a better ally and raise funds for anti-AAPI racism groups. Learn how you can stop AAPI hate by attending our community call. Join us in standing in solidarity with the AAPI community. \nIn the past year\, the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center has received approximately 4000 reports of anti-Asian incidents. Of these\, approximately 3000 incidents have been documented. Over 700 of these documented incidents occurred in the Bay Area. \nThe state of California has granted $1.4 million to the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and Stop AAPI Hate to help address anti-Asian hate incidents and hate crimes and the broader impact of COVID-19 on Asian Americans. Although this is a good start\, there’s so much more to understand and work to be done. \n#StopAAPIHate #WomenSupportingWomen \n  \nRegister here.
