SUMMARY:Transformative Transparency Exchange: Support for AAPI Journalists
DESCRIPTION:Addressing racial blind spots and supporting Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists: Following the Atlanta shootings\, the mainstream media needed deep guidance from experts like the Asian American Journalists Association on covering the Asian\, Asian American and Pacific Islander community fairly and accurately. For decades\, AAPI journalists have seen newsrooms struggle to navigate coverage of AAPI communities\, reflecting a dearth of AAPI leadership and lack of diversity within the newsrooms. \nJoin us in a conversation on how news leaders can mitigate their blind spots and better support their Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists\, featuring Nicole Dungca (The Washington Post) and Jin Ding (The Associated Press). Moderated by Paul Cheung\, NLA Board member and Director of Journalism and Technology Innovation at the ‎John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. \nThis event will not be recorded. \nFind out more about NLA’s Transformative Transparency Project and sign up for updates on future events in the series. Reach out to contact@newsleaders.org with any questions. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:At the Heart of the Matter: The Hate Stops Here: Addressing Anti-Asian Acts
DESCRIPTION:Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities have long endured xenophobia-fueled discrimination – nationally and in Colorado. The racist rhetoric and misinformation surrounding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic fueled a modern\, intensified wave of anti-Asian hate and violence. These acts pose a negative and lasting effect on individual and community health. Since the onslaught of COVID-19 in 2020\, hate crimes against AAPIs have increased nearly 150%\, and there have been 3\,800 self-reported incidences of discrimination nationally. \nThis is unacceptable. \nAs we continue to explore what it will take to create a new\, more equitable normal\, join Karen McNeil-Miller\, president and CEO of The Colorado Health Foundation on Thursday\, May 20 (Noon – 1:30 p.m. MT) for a conversation about complexities within the AAPI communities and what we can all do to curb the rise of discrimination and support their health and well-being. \nLearn more about recent and historical discrimination\, hate and violence directed at AAPI communities in our blog post\, “Standing in Solidarity with Asian and Pacific Islander Coloradans.” \nLocation: Zoom (Link will be provided in registration confirmation email.) \nDate: Thursday\, May 20 \nTime: Noon – 1:30 p.m. MT \nRegistration is free. Interpretation is available. \nLearn more about this event and the full series. \nQuestions? Contact us at info@coloradohealth.org. \nBy registering for this event\, you are agreeing to receive communications from The Colorado Health Foundation.
