FreeWings Against Hate: A Community Art Activation Initiative Event
Initiative Overview
Wings Against Hate is a transformative community art activation initiative organized by the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC). This initiative seeks to address, combat, and heal the wounds inflicted by hate, racism, and bigotry through the powerful medium of art and community engagement. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Venice Beach, this Wings Against Hate event embodies the spirit of unity, resilience, and peace-building during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to forge a path towards a more inclusive and compassionate community by leveraging the universal language of art. Wings Against Hate envisions a world where individuals are empowered to stand against hate through creative expression, fostering a culture of understanding, support, and belonging.
Event Highlights
- Community Art Creation: Participants are invited to co-create a massive, collective artwork symbolizing our shared commitment to combating hate. This living art piece, comprised of individual “wings,” represents our collective strength and diversity.
- Touchstone Workshops: Engaging workshops where participants create personal touchstones, small stones with words or symbols of empowerment, to carry as reminders of their commitment to love, support, and resilience.
- Relational Organizing Through Art: A series of activities designed to strengthen community bonds, encourage dialogue, and promote restorative justice principles. These include storytelling circles, mediation spaces, and interactive art installations.
- Pledge Against Hate: A community pledge where individuals commit to standing against hate and bigotry, reinforcing the event’s message and fostering a culture of active resistance and support.
Program Objectives
- Promote Peace and Unity: Use art as a catalyst for dialogue, understanding, and connection among diverse community members.
- Empower Individuals: Encourage personal and collective agency in the fight against hate, using creative expression as a tool for empowerment and activism.
- Educate and Advocate: Raise awareness about the impact of hate, racism, and bigotry while advocating for positive change through restorative justice and conflict resolution techniques.
