TypoTalk: “Make a difference; somewhere, however small”: Jelly talks Arts Emergency, Bite the Ballot and BCorps

“It started in 2016 with the referendum – and then Trump. Born out of a feeling of frustration and helplessness at events unfolding, it sparked a drive in us to make a difference; somewhere, however small. As an artist agency and production company, we recognised we were in a unique position having a network of image-makers, creatives and agencies as a community who we could bring together to in a joint mission. Serendipity coincided this energy with a snap general election and we threw the weight of ourselves and our network behind Bite the Ballot, a movement to encourage the youth vote.

This experience made us more confident of our ability to do things that could have impact outside of our bubble – and in 2020 we decided to embark on the journey to become a BCorps. Yes, we could just carry on functioning as a business, but we could have another purpose. Focussing again on the youth demographic and acutely aware of the challenges of entry to the creative industry, we decided to focus our efforts here at our doorstep – the demographic needed to change here too.

As a result of this stance we are currently committed to many specific partnerships: Arts Emergency, Reach out to kids, Clapton Girls School, Foundation Futures, West Thames College, all of which we believe to be demographic changing for the future.”

Chris Page was a founding director at Realtime Studios, before leaving to found Europe’s leading pre-viz agency, Three Blind Mice in 1994. In 2002 he started Jelly, one of the first integrated animation production & illustration talent businesses. They now have offices in the UK, US & Germany.

Nicki Field is Head of Illustration at Jelly London & NY, having been an Artist Agent for over 15 years.

Megan Armstrong-Challinor is Operations Manager, alongside starting a D&I committee and taking the company to B-CORP certification.

Please note: This will be our last completely free Zoom event. After exactly 2 years of making these talks happen without charge throughout the pandemic to help keep our amazing community cheered, alongside our wonderful speakers, and brilliant volunteer committee, from March onwards we will be back to charging for our events (albeit a VERY small fee to watch online – still less than a beer!) that will be used to cover our Zoom subscription fees, and (as a not-for-profit organisation) feed back in to our membership. And, don’t forget our Instagram Lives will continue. **BREAKING NEWS**: Our in-person London events will also be re-starting with a mega month of talks in March… keep an eye out on emails and socials guys! We are super excited :)
